The aurora fanning up from the horizon in beams of violet, magenta and pale green, stars showing through the colour, while the floodlit lighthouse and its long white cottages hold the bottom of the frame. Portrait format, the drama all sky.

Souter Lighthouse at Marsden was the first in the world designed and built to run on alternating electric current, the most advanced technology of its day. First lit in 1871, it was described at the time as one of the most powerful lights in the world.
