Penshaw for Ukraine

£12.50

The monument floodlit in the blue and yellow of the Ukrainian flag, photographed from low on the dark hillside against a deep indigo sky. Taken when the columns were lit in solidarity with Ukraine, a night unlike any other on the hill.

Penshaw Monument, a half-size Greek temple on its hilltop above the Wear, was built in 1844 to commemorate John Lambton, the first Earl of Durham. Visible for miles around, it is Sunderland's best-loved landmark, and a hidden staircase in one column leads to the top.
