Penshaw Monument at Sunset

£12.50

A summer sunset from the air, burnt orange cloud over parched golden grass as the stepped path snakes up the hill to the temple. Wearside spreads out hazily beyond.

Penshaw Monument, a half-size Greek temple on its hilltop above the Wear, was built in 1844 to commemorate John Lambton, the first Earl of Durham. Visible for miles around, it is Sunderland's best-loved landmark, and a hidden staircase in one column leads to the top.
