The Tyne Bridge over Sandhill
£12.50
Dusk from above Sandhill with the moon already up, the green arch rising between the turrets and chimneys of the Victorian streets while empty pavement cafes wait below. The city street view of the bridge.
The Tyne Bridge is the most celebrated of the crossings between Newcastle and Gateshead, opened by King George V in 1928. It was built by Dorman Long of Middlesbrough, the firm that went on to build Sydney Harbour Bridge, and at its opening it was the longest single-span bridge in the world.
