Swing & Tyne Bridges

£12.50

Blue hour from high above the river, the red and white Swing Bridge filling the foreground with its control cabin dead centre while the Tyne Bridge spans the cobalt sky behind. Perfectly symmetrical, the two generations of crossing stacked one behind the other.

The Swing Bridge opened in 1876 on the site of Newcastle's earlier river crossings, its hydraulic machinery engineered by William Armstrong. It pivots on its central pier to let ships pass, and it still swings today beneath the arch of its younger neighbour.
