Down the Side at Night
£12.50
Blue hour from above the curve of the Side, a Metro train crossing the viaduct arch while the cathedral's lantern tower stands against a cobalt sky and taxis queue on the wet gold cobbles below. Portrait format, layered and unmistakably old Newcastle.
The Side is a medieval street running steeply from St Nicholas' Cathedral past the Black Gate down to Sandhill on the Quayside, its name taken from its position on the side of the hill. Admiral Lord Collingwood, Nelson's second in command at Trafalgar, was born here in 1748.
