Tommy in Black and White
£12.50
A close, near square-on portrait in monochrome, every welded plate and rivet of the corten skin reading as texture beneath a long-exposure sky. Sombre and intimate, the face shadowed under the helmet's brim.
Tommy is Ray Lonsdale's corten steel sculpture of a Great War soldier in the first minute of peace, standing on Terrace Green by the seafront at Seaham. Displayed temporarily in 2014, he became permanent after local residents raised the £102,000 to keep him, handing the money over on the centenary of the war's outbreak.
