Tommy and the Poppy

Blue hour on Terrace Green, with a great community-made poppy of hundreds of knitted red petals laid out across the paving beside the sculpture, its stem trailing off the frame. The one blaze of colour in the soft morning light.

Tommy is Ray Lonsdale's corten steel sculpture of a Great War soldier in the first minute of peace, standing on Terrace Green by the seafront at Seaham. Displayed temporarily in 2014, he became permanent after local residents raised the £102,000 to keep him, handing the money over on the centenary of the war's outbreak.
