Tommy at Dawn

£12.50

Tommy in complete profile silhouette against the first light of the day, the sky running from violet through orange to pale gold over a flat dark sea. Head bowed, rifle upright, every detail of pack and helmet held in outline.

Tommy is Ray Lonsdale's corten steel sculpture of a Great War soldier in the first minute of peace, standing on Terrace Green by the seafront at Seaham. Displayed temporarily in 2014, he became permanent after local residents raised the £102,000 to keep him, handing the money over on the centenary of the war's outbreak.
